M 8.7 - 126 km ESE of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia
A powerful earthquake, initially reported around Magnitude 8.0 to 8.7, struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula today, **Wednesday, July 30, 2025**.
The quake was centered southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and was shallow, increasing its potential to generate a tsunami. Tsunami warnings and advisories have been issued for regions across the Pacific, including Russia, Japan, Guam, Hawaii, and parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands.
While initial reports indicate no major damage or casualties in Russia, emergency protocols have been activated, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. A kindergarten was reported to be damaged in Kamchatka, and an evacuation order was declared for the small town of Severo-Kurilsk in the Sakhalin region due to the tsunami warning.
This is the second major earthquake in the same peninsula this month, following a series of powerful offshore earthquakes in July, with the strongest measuring 7.4 in magnitude.
