Strong Magnitude 5.4 Eathquake Struck Sto. Domingo Albay Today

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Legaspi City, Albay in Bicol Region causing some fear from residents in the region. It was felt by thousands of people as they update their status in social media. PAG-ASA said there might be an aftershocks will follow. There were no immediate reports of damages and injuries.

Because the earthquake happened at an intermediate depth of 73 km, the shaking may have been felt over a relatively wide area across the Bicol Region, but deeper quakes usually cause less severe surface damage than shallow ones.

As this happened very recently, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is currently evaluating the exact intensities felt in specific municipalities.

What to do right now:

  • Check for Aftershocks: Stay alert, as smaller aftershocks can still follow.

  • Inspect Your Surroundings: If you are in Albay or nearby provinces, check your immediate area for any minor structural cracks or fallen objects, especially if you felt strong shaking.

  • Stay Tuned: Keep an eye on official updates from PHIVOLCS or your local PDRRMC (Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) for local damage or intensity assessments.
